Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County’s mission is to dismantle anti-black systems, policies, and outcomes that lead to the oppression, torture, and death of black and brown people.
Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County is a grassroots social justice cooperative. We focus on the empowerment and liberation of Black and other marginalized people through advocacy, education, community programs, direct action, and healing. Our Leadership centers Black women and other multi-marginalized people.
At the heart of our work lies a deep commitment to healing, justice, and community. Every day, we recommit to:
The Fist + Honeycomb + Wasp bottoms + Flower of Creation + Compass + RBG Coloring + BLM in Braille
Honey Comb:The honeycomb symbolism is to invoke the beekeeper/queenbee vibe. The beekeepers and the queenbees make sure everyone in the village has enough honey
Flower of Creation: The geometric symbol of the flower of creation can be found in the 6 rounded points. This symbolism is to say that BLMskc-REV is creating black life, and that the result of that blossoming creation is the honey for the village
Compass: The horizontal points/triangles in the middle of this piece were included to invoke the compass. In other words, the points of the Flower of Creation, and the middle horizontal triangles create a compass. This was included to say…. Let justice be our guide in dreaming and creating what BLack life should look like
The Fist: a traditional symbol of Black Power and Black pride, the fist is made of honeycomb in this piece. This is to symbolize the idea that the ultimate form of power is to create for ones own people. To bring honey to the village.
Wasp Bottoms: Inside the rounded points, are patterns inspired by the bottoms of a wasp. This particular wasp is a social wasp that lives in community with a single nest that houses thousands of members. These wasps work together, find food, raise young, and defend the nest.
RBG Coloring: Red Black and Green to represent the Black National Colors. Although BLM is not limited to representing Black folks, BLM was born out of Black struggle. The colors honor this truth.
BLM in Braille: The font for BLMSKC-REV includes open circles to show how the letters would look in braille.
